Languages other than English

Languages other than English offered at Sydney Boys High School are: Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Classical Greek.

In Year 7, students are required to select two languages for study for the year from Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, and Latin. Each language is studied for three periods per two-week cycle for the full year.

In Year 8, students must continue languages study. In general, students select one of their languages from Year 7 to pursue. An additional offline Latin class may be offered in Year 8, allowing students to continue studying both Latin and the other language concurrently. Classical Greek is offered from Year 8 onwards, to be studied in combination with Latin during Year 8. Students must have studied Latin in Year 7 in order to commence studying Classical Greek in Year 8. In Year 8, each language is studied for 7 periods per cycle.

In Years 9 and 10, students may elect to continue their languages studies. In Year 9, electives are timetabled for five periods per cycle, and in Year 10 for six periods.

In Years 11 and 12, languages are offered to HSC level, primarily at the Continuers and Extension levels. With sufficient demand, Modern Language Beginners and Chinese in Context courses may also be offered.

Additional languages may be studied through the NSW School of Languages.

Resources

A wide range of texts and electronic resources are utilised in the study of languages at Sydney Boys High School. Computer programmes such as French Language Market, Ni Hao Games, iiTomo Digital Platform and The Cambridge Latin Course online are popular with students.

Many enrichment activities are offered, such as the National Latin Exam, the National Classical Greek Exam and the National Chinese Eisteddfod. All Year 8 students participate in the annual Languages Day and Year 9 students participate in an annual Languages Camp.
